Sleep is absolutely essential for every living creature and despite the continued study sleep and its effect on human beings, we have learned a lot of interesting things about sleep.
Here are 10 things you probably never knew about sleep.
1. What happens to your body when sleeping?
- Your brain gets a well deserved recharge
- Your bodies cells begin to recharge themselves
- Your body releases important hormones essential for good health
2. Depending on our age we all require different amounts of sleep
- 16 hours for babies
- 10 hours for ages 3-12
- 10 hours for ages 13-18
- 8 hours for ages 19-55
- 6 hours for 65 years and over
3. Men tend to dream about other men 70% of the time, whilst women surprisingly dream equally about both men and women.
4. We can only dream about faces that we have seen, even if we do not actively remember them.
5. Sleep positions may determine your personality. The most common positions are:
- Fetal (41%) – People are gruff initially, but have warm and open hearts
- Log (15%) – Social butterflies
- Yearner (13%) – Perceived as open, but truly suspicious
- Soldier (8%) – Reserved
- Freefall (7%) – Fun and fantastic at parties
- Starfish (5%) – Excellent listeners
6. When dolphins sleep, only half their brain shuts down. The other half stays awake to help with breathing cycles
7. You’ll die from sleep deprivation before food depravation. It takes 2 weeks to starve, but only 10 days without sleep will kill you.
8. Blind people can still see images in dreams. Instead of sight images, those blind from birth experience dreams involving emotion, sound, smell and touch.
9. Within 5 minutes of waking, 50% of your dream is forgotten. Within 10 minutes, 90% is lost.
10. 1 out of 50 teenagers still wet their beds.
