What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns it’s way through calories just to keep itself alive. Your metabolism keeps your heart beating, your lungs breathing and your blood pumping. Your body is constantly burning calories. An average adult female burns around 10 calories per half a kg of body weight every day, whilst an average adult male burns 11 calories per half a kilo. To understand how metabolism works is the key to maximum weight loss.

Type 1: Around 10 to 30% of your total daily calorie burn comes from digesting food. Your body uses more calories to burn protein (around 25 calories for every 100 consumed) than it does for fats or carbohydrates. (around 12 calories for every 100 consumed)

Type 2: Moving around, from brushing your teeth in the morning to pushing weights at night will burn between 10 -15% of your total daily calorie intake.

Type 3: Basal (resting) metabolism is the burning of calories from sleeping, relaxing or lazing by the pool. It turns out that 60-80% of daily calories are burned from doing absolutely nothing at all.

At the end of the day you can purchase gym equipment designed by NASA and exercise as hard and often as you like. You can diet all you want. You can swap real food with as many protein shakes or meal replacements as you see fit, but real results in weight loss will only occur with combining a good nutritional balance diet and regular cardiovascular, aerobic workouts such as running or cycling with regular weight training and this is all you need to keep trim, fit an healthy for life.
