AUSTRALIANS have the earliest bedtime of any country, according to a new study of global sleep patterns.

Researchers used a smartphone app to uncover which country gets the most sleep and it seems Spaniards go to bed the latest, the Dutch get the most sleep, and people in Singapore and Japan are the most sleep-deprived.

Olivia Walch, Amy Cochran and Daniel Forger learnt about sleeping habits around the world by using Entrain, an app that was launched to help travellers adjust to new time zones. The team investigated how social pressures hide a person’s natural urge to go to bed which leads to their bedtime being delayed.

Here are the best and worst sleepers around the world:

People from the Netherlands were top of the chart, sleeping an average of five minutes more than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. Perhaps the clean air and mountains helped those in New Zealand to take second place with four extra minutes of snooze time each night. In contrast, Britons came in at eighth place.

Australians were the first to turn in, heading to bed just after 10.45pm — about an hour earlier than the Spanish, who had the world’s latest bedtime. Those in the United Arab Emirates sleep in the latest, rising just before 7:45am. The Germans also seem to have better things to do than sleep, and as a result of this perceived Insomnia is the country is the 17th worst in the world at having long rests. On average inhabitants miss out on more than 18 minutes of the suggested time.
